I am an assistant professor of English Linguistics at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands.

My research focuses on language variation and change, often in combination with language or dialect contact, and in situations involving a majority and a minority variety. I am interested in how speakers navigate potentially conflicting grammatical patterns with different social meanings in their two varieties. I have worked predominantly on small languages in the Netherlands (Frisian and Low Saxon) and insular Scandinavia (Faroese and Shetland Norn), looking at both contemporary and historical variation.

I hold a Ph.D. in English Language and Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh. I also have an M.Sc. by Research in Medieval Studies (Edinburgh) and an M.A. in Scandinavian Studies (Groningen).
